Choose the right safe – a simple guide

What do you need to protect – paper, data, keys, cash, weapons or jewelry – and against fire, burglary or both? Here you get an overview of the most common types, what they are used for and important things to remember.

Fireproof / Document cabinet

Purpose: Preserves paper and documents in case of fire.

Fire classes: P30, P60, P90 and P120 (P = paper). The cabinets have been tested in high heat (around 1090 °C) for up to 30/60/90/120 minutes without damaging the paper.

Tip: If you are going to store data media in a fire cabinet, use a separate film and data box inside the cabinet for extra protection.

Fireproof filing cabinets

Purpose: Large amounts of paper in letterboxes or hanging files.

Fire rating: Typically P30 to P90.

Why choose: Drawers provide quick access in everyday life, while the contents are fire protected.

FG-approved security cabinet

Purpose: Securing of particularly theft-prone items – and approved for storage of weapons and ammunition (in accordance with the weapons legislation).

Properties: Usually without fire protection, but with clearly better burglary protection than cabinets without FG approval.

* From Grade IV up to and including Grade IX, the maximum sum insured can be increased if the cabinet has one or more additional classifications such as for EX, CD or GAS. The increase corresponds to half the difference in the maximum sum insured from one Grade up to the next Grade. Example: Grade IV EX = 500 000 + ((750,000 - 500,000)/2) = 500,000 + 125,000 = 625,000 without alarm.
